Built to Protect: Why Testing and Certifications Matter in Custom Case Design
In technical and mission-critical environments, your gear’s survival depends not just on its own engineering but on the quality of the case that protects it. That’s why, at Custom Case Pros, testing and certification aren’t an afterthought, they’re the foundation.
As a proud Pelican distributor and technical packaging partner, we ensure every solution we deliver has been tested, validated, and proven under extreme conditions. From aerospace to defense to industrial use, our cases are more than containers, they’re a verified layer of reliability.

Why Testing Isn’t Optional
When you’re moving high-value equipment across rough terrain, through temperature extremes, or in high-vibration transport, you don’t want to wonder if your case will hold up. You want to know it has been tested, drop after drop, shake after shake, and splash after splash.
That’s why testing matters. It transforms claims into confidence. It’s not about saying your gear is safe, it’s about proving it.
Certified Standards We Build To

Pelican cases are trusted by professionals around the globe because they meet or exceed some of the toughest certification standards in the world:
MIL-STD-810 – The U.S. military’s environmental and mechanical testing standard, covering shock, humidity, vibration, temperature, and more.
ATA Spec 300 – Packaging standards from the Airline Transport Association for products shipped via air freight.
ASTM Standards – International standards for materials, performance, and lab validation.
DEF STAN 81-41 – Protective packaging standards set by the UK Ministry of Defense.
STANAG 4280 – NATO’s spec for reusable military containers used across allied nations.
IP67 Rating – Ingress Protection rating for dust-tight seals and water immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
When your case is certified to these levels, you’re not just shipping gear, you’re demonstrating compliance, professionalism, and foresight.
Performance Testing Capabilities
We don’t just rely on certifications, we perform many of the tests in-house or through trusted partners. Here’s what our performance testing program includes:
Impact Testing
Verifies a case’s ability to withstand shock from drops or blunt force.
- Penetration Testing: We perform 84” drop tests using darts weighing between 5 and 15 pounds.
- Drop Testing: Conducted on every corner, edge, and face of the case to simulate real-world mishandling.
Vibration Testing
Ensures your case survives continuous motion during shipping, ground transport, or air travel.
- We use a L.A.B. servo hydraulic vibration system with 0–300 Hz range.
- Pre-programmed profiles follow ISTA Integrity Testing Procedures, simulating real-world transit conditions.
Immersion / Waterproof Testing
Proves your case can handle wet environments and full immersion.
- Multiple immersion tanks can simulate underwater scenarios up to 2 meters deep.
- Confirms IP67 waterproof integrity across seals and hardware.
Extreme Temperature & Environmental Testing
Validates performance under thermal and atmospheric stress.
- Our walk-in environmental chamber (6’ x 8’ x 8’) supports temperatures from -100°F to +200°F.
- Salt fog chamber testing checks hardware resistance to corrosion, simulating coastal and marine conditions.
These test results are available to clients who require documentation for internal quality checks, government contracts, or product qualification.

Testing the Foam, Not Just the Case
A rugged case is only half the equation. Your foam matters just as much.
At Custom Case Pros, we offer:
- Polyethylene and polyurethane foams in multiple densities
- Anti-static foam for electronics
- Cross-link polyethylene (XLPE) for high-performance cushioning
- Reinforced trays and HDPE bases for removable or multi-level applications
Foam layouts are validated with test fittings, 3D CAD plotting, and client approvals before final production. We can match the fragility rating of your components to the ideal foam density, thickness, and placement strategy.
Case Study: Protecting Aerospace Assets in Harsh Conditions
One of our aerospace clients needed packaging for precision components with low drop tolerance, headed for field use across multiple climates. We selected a rotationally molded Pelican case, built a custom multi-density foam interior, and conducted drop and vibration testing per MIL-STD-810.
Post-deployment reports confirmed zero damage, despite the case being transported via truck, helicopter, and hand carry in dusty, humid environments.
Compliance That Goes Beyond the Case
As a WOSB and HUBZone-certified business, we understand your program demands more than rugged hardware. You need a partner who speaks the language of compliance:
- DFARS clause support
- NIST SP 800-171 and SPRS registration
- ITAR documentation
- Controlled Unclassified Info (CUI) handling protocols
Whether you’re submitting a proposal, preparing for an audit, or vetting suppliers for a critical mission, we’re built to meet the same standards your operation is held to.
Why Certifications Protect More Than Equipment
Investing in tested and certified packaging has far-reaching benefits:
- Prevents equipment damage that can halt mission readiness
- Reduces repair and replacement costs
- Improves first-time deployment success
- Supports audit and compliance requirements
- Increases confidence across teams and leadership
And let’s not forget the most overlooked benefit: peace of mind. When every detail matters, there’s no room for “good enough.”
