How to Choose the Right Pelican Case Size for Your Equipment
When it comes to protecting your gear, size matters. A case that’s too small leaves no room for accessories or foam padding. Too large, and you’re carrying unnecessary weight and wasting space. Choosing the right Pelican case size ensures your equipment travels safely, efficiently, and with room to grow.
Step 1: Measure Your Equipment
Start with accurate measurements, length, width, and height of your gear. Don’t forget to account for handles, knobs, or protrusions. If you’re protecting multiple items, measure them all and consider how they’ll be arranged inside the case.
Step 2: Allow for Foam Thickness and Clearance
A protective case is more than just the shell. Foam inserts provide the cushion that absorbs impact. That means you’ll need extra room on all sides, typically a minimum of ½” to 1″ of clearance around each item for the foam to perform properly.
Step 3: Plan for Accessories and Future Needs
Will you be adding cables, chargers, or spare parts? Building in a little extra room now saves you from needing another case later. If your equipment lineup may expand, plan for growth when selecting your case dimensions.
Step 4: Factor in Transportation Method
Consider how your case will be handled. If it’s carried by hand, size and weight should allow for portability. For heavier or bulkier loads, Pelican single lid or fork truck-compatible cases may be the best fit, allowing forklift access for safe handling.
Step 5: Balance Weight and Portability
The largest case isn’t always the best choice. While Pelican cases are lightweight for their strength, oversizing can make transport cumbersome. Matching case size to your operational needs keeps your load manageable.
A customer once approached us with oversized cases that were difficult to transport and required two people to carry. By resizing their case and custom foam layout, we cut the overall footprint by nearly 50%, making the case portable, secure, and much easier to handle in the field.
Choosing the right size case doesn’t have to be overwhelming. At Custom Case Pros, we measure your items on site, design the foam in CAD, and provide a plotted image for your review before production. That way, you know your gear will fit securely the first time.
