Pelican Products, Inc. Celebrates 50 Years of Protection
A Life-Saving Idea Born in a Garage
The Pelican story begins in 1976 in Torrance, California, with a problem that needed solving. Scuba enthusiast Dave Parker fashioned a simple but effective safety device in his garage using a length of twine, a metal weight, and a hockey stick handle. The device, designed to float on the water’s surface and mark a diver’s location, became known as the “Peli Float.”
Parker believed this invention had the potential to save lives. He was right.
That belief, that well-designed, durable tools could make a real difference in dangerous environments, became the foundation of Pelican Products.

From Dive Safety to Equipment Protection
Eager to build on his early success, Parker turned his attention to another critical need in the dive community: protecting first aid supplies from water, dust, and impact. He designed rugged cases capable of withstanding harsh marine conditions while keeping contents completely sealed.
Divers quickly recognized the value of these cases beyond first aid. Many discarded the original contents and repurposed the cases to protect cameras, tools, and other valuables. What began as a niche solution soon revealed broader potential.
In 1978, Pelican introduced its first Protector Case, featuring an airtight and watertight gasket that would become a defining characteristic of the brand. This product marked a turning point, establishing Pelican as a leader in protective case design and setting a standard that competitors would follow for decades.
Designing for the Worst Day, Not the Best
From the beginning, Dave Parker’s philosophy was clear: products should be judged by how they perform when conditions are at their worst. Pelican cases were not designed for showroom floors or ideal scenarios. They were built to survive being dropped, submerged, scuffed, run over, and exposed to extreme environments.
This mindset shaped every design decision. If a product could not perform reliably in real-world conditions, it did not move forward. Pelican measured success in the simplest way possible: it either did its job, or it didn’t bear the Pelican name.
That discipline earned trust long before Pelican became a globally recognized brand.
Engineering Protection at Scale
As demand grew, Pelican invested heavily in engineering, manufacturing, and quality control. In the early 1990s, molding operations were brought in house, giving Pelican direct oversight of materials, processes, and consistency. This move reinforced the company’s commitment to performance over convenience.
Over time, Pelican expanded its portfolio to include advanced portable lighting systems, temperature-controlled packaging, and custom engineered case solutions. These innovations supported an ever-widening range of industries, including military, law enforcement, fire and rescue, aerospace, medical, and consumer entertainment.
Strategic global expansion followed, with facilities, sales offices, and service centers established around the world. In Europe, products became known under the Peli name, but the standards remained unchanged.
Growth Without Compromise
Pelican’s growth has been shaped by thoughtful acquisitions and product introductions that aligned with its core mission. The acquisition of Hardigg Industries in 2009 expanded Pelican’s capabilities into rotationally molded cases for large, mission-critical applications. Additional advancements in lighting systems, EMS-specific cases, and temperature-controlled packaging followed.
Despite its global footprint, now spanning multiple manufacturing facilities and international offices, Pelican’s identity remains rooted in its original values. Expansion has never come at the expense of reliability.

Proven Where It Matters Most
Pelican products are tested not only in laboratories, but in the field. Stories of survival and heroic efforts involving Pelican cases and lighting systems have accumulated for decades. From disaster response and military deployments to medical transport and remote film locations, Pelican products are expected to perform without hesitation.
They are built to be roughed up, thrown, dropped, submerged, and exposed, because that is the reality of the environments they serve.
A Legacy Defined by Trust
Today, Pelican remains headquartered in Torrance, California, where it operates extensive manufacturing and office space while supporting a global network of facilities and partners. The company’s success is measured not by units sold, but by trust earned.
Pelican understands that the most valuable thing anyone places inside one of its products is not equipment, it is confidence. Confidence that what matters will be protected. Confidence that the case will perform when it counts.
As Pelican approaches its 50th anniversary, its legacy is clear. Built from a life-saving idea in a garage, shaped by disciplined engineering, and sustained by an uncompromising standard, Pelican Products continues to protect what people value most.

If it’s made by Pelican, it’s built to protect.
