Stacking Strength: Why Pelican Single Lid and Dual Entry Cases Are Built to Bear the Load

When you’re managing military, aerospace, or industrial-grade equipment, your protective cases must do more than shield from impact—they must stack with strength and precision. That’s why Pelican Single Lid and Double Entry (DE) Rackmount cases have been a trusted standard in the U.S. Military for over four decades.
These rugged, rotationally molded containers are engineered for real-world stacking scenarios, with every detail—from edge thickness to handle well design—built for structural integrity.

Strength Where It Counts

Pelican Single Lid and DE cases are constructed with 20% more protective material in their edges and corners—the areas most vulnerable to drops and impacts. This strategic reinforcement ensures gear inside remains secure, even during the roughest transport or storage conditions.

Key Structural Features:

  • One-piece construction with molded-in ribs and corrugations delivers:
    • High column strength
    • Non-slip stacking
    • Additional impact resistance
  • Raised stacking ribs on the case lid are designed to nest perfectly into indents on the bottom of the case above, locking cases together and preventing unwanted movement during transit.
  • Positive anti-shear locks help the lid resist shifting after impact, reducing stress on the hinges and latches.
  • Tongue-and-groove gaskets form tight, splash-resistant closures—even under stress.

Handle wells that Hold More Than Handles

The integrated handle wells on Pelican cases aren’t just for lifting—they are structurally functional. Built into the sidewalls, these recesses form a corrugated reinforcement pattern that enhances stacking strength by resisting compression.

Rule of Thumb for Stacking Load Capacity:

If the cases are:

  • Like-stacked
  • Positioned on a flat surface
  • No taller than 24 inches

Then the per-handle well capacity is:

  • 150 lbs. (68 kg) for Single Lid cases
  • 100 lbs. (45.4 kg) for DE rackmount cases

🔎 That means a Single Lid case with 8 handle wells can support up to 1,200 lbs. stacked on top.

Built to Interlock: Inter-Stacking Design

Some case models go even further with inter-stacking patterns engineered into the case body itself. These specialized designs allow cases to nest and lock from multiple directions, not just top-to-bottom, offering added stability and flexibility in complex loadouts or transport stacks.

These cases are denoted by the “IS” prefix in the part number—for example, IS2521-0903.

Why Stacking Design Matters

In environments where space is tight and safety is non-negotiable, stacking performance is critical. Choosing cases designed with stacking integrity means:

  • Safer storage and transport, even with heavy equipment
  • Fewer damaged parts from collapsed stacks
  • Better use of storage space on trucks, pallets, or in the field
  • Long-term ROI from rugged, reusable containers that hold up under pressure
